The number of airport passengers at Faro airport, as well as the number of overnight stays at hotels in the Algarve, rose in September, compared to the same month in 2010.
According to figures released by the regional tourism board, Turismo do Algarve, a total of 724,445 passengers travelled through Faro airport in September, representing a 3.3 percent increase compared to the same month last year.
In September, the region’s hotels recorded 1.78 million overnight stays, an increase of 4.8 percent compared to the same month last year, while revenue totalled €73.2 million, representing a 4.6 percent increase.
These figures were published in the regular bulletin entitled ‘Algarve: conjuntura turistica’.
“On a national level, overnight stays in the Algarve represented 39.9 percent of the total for that same month,” read the bulletin.
All of the main tourist markets showed positive increases, especially Holland (11.3 percent) and the UK (10 percent), although Portuguese tourists fell by 0.8 percent.
Faro airport’s figures also show an increase in the number of passengers from the main tourist markets, namely Spain (12.6 percent), Holland (16.5 percent), the UK (9.2 percent) and Portugal 85.3 percent). Decreases were seen in the numbers of German and Irish passengers of 23.2 percent and 0.7 percent, respectively.
Turismo do Algarve also revealed that in September 2011, the region’s golf courses hosted 97,146 round of golf, representing a 2.8 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
