Tourist accommodation still performing well

The Algarve was the busiest region, having contributed with 44.6 percent of the total overnight stays and enjoys a year-on-year growth of 9.5 percent, to which an acute demand for this region from several main markets of origin contributed decisively.

On a national scale, the overall revenue generated by tourism in July reached €240.8 million, €172.8 of which from the accommodation sector. This represents year-on-year increases of 11.1 percent and 12.5 percent, respectively.

Between January and July 2011 the accommodation sector registered 7.9 million guests and 22.1 million overnight stays, increases of 6.1 percent and 8.9 percent respectively, in comparison to the same period of last year.

Non-residents provided 13.8 percent more overnight stays than they did in the same period of 2010, with the British market having grown by 18.9 percent, and the Spanish market improving by 11.3 percent.

In July this year some 1.6 million guests stayed in tourist accommodation in Portugal, 8.3 percent more people than in July 2010, the majority of whom stayed in hotels and apart-hotels, particularly in four and five star units.

Furthermore, as a consequence of the conversion of certain types of establishments, in accordance with the new legal regime of categorising tourist accommodation, there was also significant growth within the one and two star hotels, of 18.7 percent.

However, for the third consecutive month, resorts and tourist villages registered less stays than the year before. In the month of July this year 6.5 percent fewer people stayed in that type of accommodation than in the same month of the year before.

Regarding growths in occupancy rates, the island of Madeira registered the biggest growth, followed by Lisbon and the Algarve.

Results for the month of July showed that the Algarve had an overall occupancy of nearly 70 percent, while Madeira was 65.3 percent full, the Azores (57.7 percent occupancy) and Lisbon (57.1 percent).

From January until the end of July this year, tourism in Portugal generated over €1.040 billion, nearly €707 million of which from accommodation. These figures indicate positive growths of 7.5 percent and 9.2 percent respectively, in comparison to the same period of 2010.
